Editing
and adding polygons to represent the NCSU campus recreation facilities and
producing a layout map.

Campus
Data: Buildings – buildings on the NCSU central
campus (polygons)
Recreation - recreation areas on the NCSU campus (polygons)
Ralw_se_clip.img - an aerial photo of
the NCSU campus(raster)

Start ArcMap and add the
Buildings feature data set, Recreation feature data set, and ralw_se_clip.img
image.
Add data layers listed above
Result: Data is loaded into ArcMap
Change the name of the
ralw_se_clip.img image to NCSU Campus
Target Layer: Ralw_se_clip.img
Click Ralw_se_clip.img in the table of contents
Replace “Ralw_se_clip.img” with “NCSU Campus”
Result: Layer name is different
Fix
Zoom
in to the tennis courts
Target Layer: Recreation
Pan to the three tennis courts
Result: tennis courts now in the display
Edit
Tennis Court 3 to place it in the correct location
Target
Layer: Recreation
Click Editor > Start Editiing
Click and hold and court three
Drag court three to the center of the court on the raster
image, drop
Result: tennis courts now in the right place according to
the raster image
Correct
the orientation of court three
Target
Layer: Recreation
Click court three to select it
Click the Rotate button on the editor menu
Rotate court three to the correct orientation as per the
raster image
Result: tennis courts now has the correct orientation
Correct the dimensions of
court three
Target
Layer: Recreation
Click inside court three to reveal vertices
Drag and drop vertices into the correct places, as per
the raster image
Result: court three now in the correct place and the
correct size
Digitize
Derr Track, Doak Baseball Field and the
Miller Intramural Fields
Pan to Derr Track
Target
Layer: NCSU Campus
Use
Pan tool to go to Derr Track area
Result:
Derr Track now in viewer
Create new polygon features
for Derr Track
Target
Layer: Recreation
Use
End Point Arc Tool to create the two arced ends of the track
Use
Sketch Tool to create lines between the corners of the arcs
Select
the three polygons that make up the track
Merge
selected polygons (right click, Merge)
Result:
Derr Track now digitized
Pan to Doak Field
Target
Layer: NCSU Campus
Use
Pan tool to go to Doak Field area
Result:
Doak Field now in viewer
Create new polygon feature
for Doak Field
Target
Layer: Recreation
Use
sketch tool to create a polygon the same shape of the field

Pan to the Miller Intramural
Fields

Create Layout to display map

Add scale bar
Activate map
Click Insert > Scale Bar
Ensure units are in feet
Choose appropriate bar
Make sure bar display has nice numbers (ie 2000, not 1950)
Result: scale bar now present
Add North Arrow
Activate map
Insert > North Arrow
Choose appropriate arrow
Result: North arrow now present
Add Title
Click new text button
Enter appropriate information
Format to large size by changing symbol to font size 22
Result: Title now present
Add name and date
Click new text button
Enter appropriate information
Result: name and date now present
Add Neatline
Click Insert > Neatline
Select Place inside margins
Result: neatline now present
Add legend
Click Insert > Legend
Set border line at 1.0 point
Set background color to white
Result: legend now present
Format legend
Double click legend to get legend properties dialog open
Click Frame tab
Set both X and Y gap for both border and background to 5
points
Click Legend tab
Result: legend now more visually appealing
Resize all items to reduce
clutter and improve readability
Select items individually, place and resize appropriately
Result: layout now more visually appealing
